Our Approach
Heartland Rewilding promotes ethical coexistence that reduces harm to both human and non-human life, questions human domination over wild lives, and respects non-human autonomy, agency, and wellbeing.
This philosophy is integrated into our Coexisting with Wildlife Program, which focuses on working with communities to promote education on coexistence, draft coexistence plans, and engage in policy processes (legislation and rule-making) to improve the protection and wellbeing of wild lives – especially those that have been maligned for centuries, such as coyotes, cougars, bears, and wolves.

Our Active Campaigns
Studies show that the majority of Midwesterners support non-lethal solutions to human-wildlife conflict. Coexistence is the future.
What is Coexistence
Human-wildlife coexistence is a state in which both people and wildlife exist in proximity to each other and have their interests and needs generally met. Coexistence can be an easy equilibrium with little effort, but when wildlife are recolonizing and recovering in an area, coexistence often requires education and behavior change.
Coexistence through non-lethal methods is compassionate, cost-effective, safer for all lives, proactive, and preventative. It focuses on education, reporting, and social systems to influence the behavior of humans and wildlife. Cities, towns, and counties across the country–from Marin County, California to Austin, Texas–that have implemented non-lethal coexistence programs have seen reductions in conflict and decreases in programmatic costs. They also see increased community engagement and positive feedback because they are addressing the values and needs of their entire community.
Heartland Rewilding actively works to create a Midwestern landscape where humans and wildlife thrive. Join us in protecting our wild neighbors by learning how to coexist.
